1. Febo is the most economical and efficient way to get your food fid. I wish they had one on every corner in North America.

2. You MUST try the french fries with mayo while in Amsterdam. Mayo as a dip for fries is popular in Europe, but perfected here.

3. Keep your eyes out for various festivals going on. Often, they are handing out copious amounts of free food to attract visitors.

Amsterdam is laced with countless fine dining restaurants and chic, ultra European establishments. Which is great, if you’re – how shall I say this – up for that sort of thing. Looking back at my experience in Amsterdam,  my primary concern was to find food that would take less than a minute to order, and devour as much of it as I possibly could in about as long. Let’s be honest, the city of Amsterdam is well aware of the fact that this is the mindset that the good majority of back-packers will be in. Thus local businesses and festivals have found a way to attract the hoards by catering to those on the search for the best munchies that they can get their hands on.

In my personal opinion, the king of this business model is Febo. Burgers, hot dogs, fried chicken, and countless other fast food favorites are stocked in tiny glass departments that open when the appropriate amount of change has been entered in to their respective coin slots. Within mere moments of one customer purchasing a burger from one of the slots, another one fills its place. It’s dirt cheap, it’s delicious, and it gives a whole new meaning to the term fast food. In a city that finds itself a destination for unusually hungry (and impatient) tourists, you can’t beat Febo.

The other spot in Europe’s most indulgent city that seems to lure the backpackers just as much as Febo are the french fry stands. They are numerous, and all over the place. Deliciously soft french fries are packed in to a paper cone and topped with a large wad of mayo. From my four years in Montreal I learned to love fries dipped in mayo as opposed to ketchup, and so I was more than happy to clog my arteries with this combo numerous times throughout the day in Amsterdam. Of all the french fry shops that I stumbled upon, Chipsy King was my favorite.

Of course, Amsterdam also specializes in pastry and chocolate shops that are simply too good to handle. The french fries topped in mayo as well as Febo are a bit better for the money conscious, but a trip to Amsterdam would not be complete without stuffing your face with some hardcore sugar.

The other suggestion that I would have is to keep an eye on various festivals going on throughout the old city center. When I happened to be visiting, every mini festival that I stumbled upon seemed to supply copious amounts of free food. More specifically, a youth soccer tournament at Dam Square (just outside of the palace, considered the heart of Amsterdam) was handing out free peanut butter sandwiches. I’m pretty sure that I devoured at least 10. All in all, this is a city that knows how to feed people in the most efficient manner possible. Thank god for that, because I remember being just so… hungry.
