His Take: Amelio’s Pizza in Montreal’s McGill Ghetto

Tucked away in the McGill Ghetto, Amelio’s is a tightly packed tour de force of unforgettable pizza. I can’t quite put my finger on what makes Amelio’s so good, but I’ll try. 1. Bring your own wine… or beer. Montreal is unique in that there is no corking fees on any of the BYOB spots. Can’t help but love this city.

2. The “5 Cheese Pizza” is my top suggestion. No meat, but unbeatable.

3. Cash Only.

I can’t quite put my finger on what makes Amelio’s so good, but I’ll try. The tomato sauce is incredibly smooth, adding a softness to an already melt in your mouth dough that I imagine would be difficult to duplicate. And of course, the cheese… this is REAL cheese. I’ve been in dominos and seen my pizza made in front of me. The cheese is processed, pre-grated, and hastily shaken out of a plastic bag… a process that must have been laid out by the head office as “the most efficient method.” Amelio’s is your local pizza joint, truly baking passion in to their product as opposed to quick delivery. Try the 5 cheese pizza, and you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Like so many other restaurants in downtown Montreal that makes this one of the coolest cities on the planet, Amelio’s is a “bring your own alcohol.” There’s a couple of dep’s nearby, such as Green’s Supermarket, to grab a cheap bottle or even a six pack to sip on over your meal.

On a snowy winter’s evening, there are few places as cozy and delightful as Amelio’s. Don’t miss this hole-in-the-wall on the corner Milton and Sainte Famille.
